Freedom — a painting of four women in different skin tones rooted like trees, reaching toward the sun

About the Work

Freedom is a self-initiated piece, in progress, about the freedom and emancipation of women. Its message is one of universal equality and the common aspirations of all women worldwide — a tree-like longing for light and space that informs their growth.

The figures are rooted like trees and rise in different skin tones, speaking to equality across every race and colour as they all grow upward, reaching toward the sun.

Set into the butterfly sections are small cuts of glass that catch the light, a fragile brightness carried within the larger movement of the work.
